An unchanged St Helens side, fresh from their confidence
boosting win over the Leeds Rhinos last time out, were at home again to face a
Salford Red Devils side who have had another tumultuous week on the
administration side of their business.
Losing by an average score of 42-6 so far in 2025, Salford were
given a forty-eight-point start on the coupon in a game that they could not
possibly win, and which would be a matter of how many they could keep the red
vee to scoring.
A win for Saints would secure their fifth spot and lift them
to within a point of the Leigh Leopards, ready to pounce on fourth spot should
Adrian Lam’s side slip up again.
Just under eight minutes had elapsed when Kyle Feldt saw two
Salford defenders out of position and went between them for a short range try. He
was unable to add the conversion from wide, but the home side were off and
running.
Owen Dagnall scored from twenty metres out on twenty-three
to double the Saints score, diving in at the corner to give the chasing
defenders no chance of effecting a tackle. Feldt was again unable to add the extras,
Saints going up in fours.
Feldt was over for his second of the afternoon on thirty-two
as he took a Tristan Sailor offload to go down the wing and show too much pace
for the Salford defenders as he crossed in the corner. Jonny Lomax took over
the kicking duties and converted in off the upright for 14-0, Saints building a
comfortable lead as expected.
Two minutes from the interval, Morgan Knowles crossed for
the fourth Saints try of the game as he spotted a gap in the defensive line to take
an inside pass and go over from ten metres for a simple score. Lomax added the
extras for a 20-0 half time lead, everything going to plan.
Any hopes of a second half Salford fightback were dashed on
forty-eight when Daryl Clark took a Knowles inside pass on the halfway line and
go through a gap for a fifty-metre jog to the line to score under the sticks.
Lomax added the conversion for 26-0.
A spectacular attempt from Owen Dagnall for his second,
hacking forward a poor pass and chasing it to goal to catch and ground in a
single action to bring up the thirty for Saints. Lomax added the touchline
conversion for four from four.
Within a minute Sailor went straight down the middle for his
first try of the game after taking the pass from Lomax on the thirty-metre
line. Lomax made it goal number five for 38-0.
In a selfless act Sailor went over the line but rather than
grounding he passed to Jake Burns over the line for the youngster to score.
Lomax hit the mark again as the Saints moved within one converted try of the
fifty.
Burns got his second in two minutes with a scoot from acting
half back, throwing the dummy and diving in from two metres out. Lomax was
again on target as Saints hit the half century.
Sailor got the tenth Saints try on seventy-three, the game
now resembling an unopposed training session, as he ran the arc through a
surrendering Salford defence. Lomax failed with his seventh attempt at a conversion,
but it made no difference.
Feldt completed his hat-trick on seventy-seven taking a
looping pass and walking over the line for another simple score. Lomax missed
another, Saints with a 58-0 victory.
Salford put up some resistance in the early exchanges but
once St Helens started scoring there was no stopping them as they put the Red
Devils to the sword just as they had in rounds one and fourteen of Super League
2025. The aggregate score for this season’s three games an astonishing 184-4,
and in this one the Saints barely had to get out of first gear.
