Just perusing Youtube and this game from the last year at Wilderspool in 2003 came up https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gd7hWStMpLc which i mentioned on another thread ages ago when we were talking about old games. Only down side is the awful biased commentary as it's a Saints club video. Watch out for Fozzard taking somebody out at about 101.20 minutes in!A 30 all draw against Saints. I was at this game and i really enjoyed that year under Cullen as we were underdogs in most games. We pushed quite a few big teams that year at Wilderspool. IIRC we lost narrowly to Bradford and Wigan. And the team had plenty of journeyman/average players that started to play well for each other but there are very little highlight videos from that season on Youtube like the wins we had against Widnes etc.

| The montages for the 93/4 season, featuring MoS winner Johnny Davies are pure pornography
Likewise the Barrow/Boyd coached 86/7 season. Andy Gregory's passes to Mark Roberts were worth the admission money, alone

| The guy uploading these has an insane library. Must have uploaded about 5,000 games so far or RL related stuff. Watched Cas v Wire in 2010 the other day. Quality isn't great but its watchable.

| Not the greatest Wire team ever, but you wouldn't bet against them beating the current rabble.
Briers was twice the half back Williams is for a start.

I've never seen the like of since, the line and pace of Roberts and the timing off the pass.

I have said it many times players like Briers you can’t coach what he had, I always say it’s your George Best, Alex Higgins, Ronnie O’Sullivan, Paul Gascoigne moments. These people are generational and don’t come along that often.

Expectations were low after nearly getting relegated the year before. It's the last year we'd ever regard just getting to the playoffs as a successful season. Felt like the team was together and the fans were behind them. We played some good rugby that season and there were 'characters' in the team who the fans liked...Nat Wood, Briers, Domic, Appo, Burns, Fozzard was popular before he went to Saints, Grose. Even some of the lesser heralded players like Guisset, Smyth, Hilton and Wainwright seemed to connect with fans more than the current players do. That was also the last time the Wire-Widnes derbies were fought between two equal teams and that rivalry was a good part of the season. I remember Cullen saying the goal for the year was to "leave Wilderspool with dignity" and we did. We had about 4 "last ever" games at Wilderspool, but that final league game against Wakefield was a superb day, one of the most memorable games of my life as a Wire fan. The next year we started to get "big time" ambitions, moving to the HJ, then Simon Moran taking us over, signing Fa'afili and Gleeson, the ambition and excitement around the club went up but along with that came the frustration of underachievement when in 2003 it felt like we were happy with what we had done.

This post nails it, back in the day expectations were never like they have been since we moved to the HJ and the squads and facilities that came with it. Back then it was just a day out on a Sunday hope for a win but at least see some good games and at least some effort. Then we became a buying club and tried to buy a grand final win and I guess got took advantage of by some agents and players looking for a pension not to say it was the clubs fault aswell. In recent times I’d like to think we have learned a bit and not just throwing money at players but we can’t seem to shake that culture off. I like to think we are a big club now in the sense we have the ground and facilities and financially ok, just a lot of other frustrations that have been discussed to death on here.
