Two tries from Joel Monaghan helped Warrington to an efficient 26-14 win over Wakefield at the Halliwell Jones Stadium and put them second in the table.

The result leaves Warrington just one point behind leaders Huddersfield, while setting back Wakefield's play off hopes to leave them in tenth place, three points outside the play off positions. However, the match seemed more akin to a training contest rather than one which had significant Super League places at stake, in the sense that it severely lacked the intensity and flair that characterises many top level matches.

Warrington gave textbook lessons in offensive and defensive play, scoring tries, especially taking advantage of Wakefield's vunerable left side, while tackling with consistency and efficiency, without being spectacular. Wakefield, on the other hand, never looked like troubling the hosts, despite the close scoreline.

The Wolves opened the scoring on eight minutes, when Joel Monaghan touched down in the right corner after the ball was worked wide, but Stefan Ratchford was unable to convert. Indeed, it was a bad day for goal kickers all round, with each side only able to score one conversion.

Wakefield were able to level the scores nine minutes later, as Frankie Mariano gathered a Tim Smith crossfield kick to the right corner and forced his way over the line, although stand in goal kicker Lee Smith was unable to convert. Tim Smith's concession of a penalty three minutes later allowed the Wolves to regain the lead, as they once again took advantage of questionable defence in the right corner, Brett Hodgson the beneficiary this time for an unconverted try.

The in form Danny Kirmond brought the scores level again eight minutes later, showing fantastic strength to touch down from a short ball ten metres out, a try that was again unconverted. The Wildcats appeared to grow in confidence, but this was short lived, as Warrington's third try four minutes before the break established their iron grip on the game. It was the most audacious try of the match; Michael Monaghan producing a wonderful step to break the line before approaching full back Richie Mathers. Unable to beat him, he attempted an offload, which ricocheted off his supporting man's leg, eventually landing under the posts for Mickey Higham to drop on it, a try which produced Warrington's only conversion of the match, leading to a 14-8 half time scoreline.

This try spurred the hosts on to a dominant second half performance. Although Wakefield enjoyed a large amount of possession in the Warrington half, they never looked able to utilise it effectively, which allowed Warrington to cut loose. Joel Monaghan grabbed his second try on 53 minutes in almost carbon copy fashion to his first, while three minutes later, an inside ball from Hodgson 60 metres out released Ben Westwood, who drew the full back and passed for Chris Bridge to run in unopposed from 30 metres. Both tries were unconverted, despite both Ratchford and Bridge respectively taking attempts.

Wakefield were gifted an opportunity to get back into the game on 61 minutes, as Trent Waterhouse offloaded straight into the hands of Wildcats flyer Liam Kay, who scored from 70 metres out near the posts, allowed Lee Smith to narrow the deficit to 12 points. However, another efficient Warrington try six minutes later, as Chris Riley touched down in the left corner after quick hands across the pitch for an unconverted try, proved to be the final nail in the coffin, as Warrington proceeded to close the game out with the dominant efficiency that they had displayed throughout the entire encounter.
