Re: CC and recruitment : Mon Mar 27, 2023 11:05 am
The recruitment wasn't always bad thought, its only in the last couple of years where we have started really failing and clearly cutting back on the playing budget.

2017 we brought in the likes of Huby, Randall and Sam Williams all 3 of which were good signings and all 3 of which would not be considered cheap options. 2018 we brought in the likes of Rocky and Justin Horo and Pauli Pauli all 3 of which are miles better than anything we brought in this year. Even in 2019 we brought in Kelepi, Kopzcak and George King, again all much better than anyone we have signed recently. It isn't just a case of them turning out to be good signings, they all looked like good signings on paper as well.

The board cut the budget and the quality of signings went downhill and no mater how much you blame Chester for signing the likes of Hood, Lineham and Gaskell, the board who lets face it are not rugby people still signed off on those deals.

Yes pal, I do.

I only repeated it, as not everyone has Facebook and while the subject was re brought up about old signings etc.

Don’t 100% agree with this mate. For every Atoni you get a Paul Aiton. Atoni was a regular draw at the Bulldogs before going to the Roosters. Although it obviously means diddly squat as he’s been atrocious in my opinion.

Take your point.

I dare say that if our overseas players were at one of our better clubs that they would have to perform, which undoubtedly they can ,or have done recently in their careers .The problem for me is that everything has gone flat of late and these players are only following suit with the lacklustre performances ,whilst we had hoped they would have given our beleaguered troops a lift ,they have done the opposite and settled into easy street far too quickly for my liking, and in the case of Atoni ,who hasn’t even got out of the starting blocks . They all have good credentials ,but bringing them to the table is proving very difficult and frustrating

Well, you say that, but at the time there wasn't much (wrongly) enthusiasm for Pauli, Horo, Kelepi, Koppy and King.
Kelepi has proved himself....
I thought Horo, Koppy & King were underated.
Pauli was frustrating (lovely guy though) and if we'd have at him at dirty leeds we'd have got over the line in the 1st half...
The rest I agree with. :P

Gaskell, and how a certain person at the club who used to post on here, went on here a while ago, stating they wouldn't sign him despite him being offered to us on several occasions

Still can't see the problem
1) why would he share the truth on here
2) if the coach wants him would you want the CEO making the decision unless on cost.

And actually, you don't know it was him that wrote it.

Personally I wouldn't have signed him but I'm not the coach or the CEO.

Our 7 overseas signings are the worst ever. Only Whitbread gives us what we want. Tanginoa lost interest as soon as he got a long term deal. Lino isn't the playmaker we thought we were getting. Proctor and Langi are past it. Tofua is bang average and Atoni is stealing a wage

Agree they are the worst over sea signings I have seen at the club .Far too old or not good enough.Been better to keep Dave and Arona here and given more money to Miller .At least they new what the club ment to the fans .Lino looks to be getting plenty of undeserved stick now ,but in fairness to him, W Lewis was one of the all time greats but he could not save Wakefield, as just like Lino he was playing in one of the worst teams I have seen at Wakefield

Regards the overseas here’s my take…

Proctor - I like him. Hes been putting in some real shifts especially in defence and offers a decent link up. Hes not a rampaging forward but I certainly think he’s been a solid and committed performer for us.

Lino - though I’m not convinced he’s what we need beyond this season I do think he’s decent and it’s been pretty tough for him behind a team and pack that’s constantly struggling to come out from deep. We will only see his best when we are showing more go forward and pressing on the front foot.

Atoni - his first 2 games he looked good. Did anyone notice that both these games he came off the bench in the 2nd quarter and made an impact? Since he’s started games he hasn’t been as effective and also since he took a thumping hit in earlier rounds he seems to check his runs a bit instead of going full tilt. I would have him coming off the bench and seeing if he can find some go forward and find some form. Let’s not forget some forwards take time to settle. Whitbread 1st half of season last year was solid/average but in that second half he really did start showing some fantastic form. I think we need to keep the faith a bit with Atoni.

Langi - definitely not a halfback. He’s a centre and he was solid at centre.

I wouldn’t say I’m impressed by our overseas but I think there could be more to come from them. Too early to write them off yet.

I honestly believe having Tanginoa/Bowden bank in the forwards will be a huge boost. Tanginoa especially has been a huge miss and I expect to see him really digging deep when he gets back. As someone alluded to I don’t think we’ve seen anything like that destructive player when we signed him. We sure need that Tanginoa now.

The Smith/Lino seems the way forward in the halves. We need to stick with them and give them a sustained run.

My only concern is full back… we need to bring in a good standard full back.
