Andy Last - new assistant : Mon Sep 02, 2024 1:46 pm
Andy Last coming back as an assistant in 2025.

Thoughts ?

Lazy appointment when our priorities are improving attack and defence. Neither were great the last time he was here

I'm happy with that. Bags of experience, knows the club, understands the fans. It's not like we're going to sign up a bunch of NRL assistant coaches. The direction from Cartwright will dictate how things are done. It's a similar scenario to Grix, Cummings etc. At least there's some commitment to building a team around the head coach.

Not a world beater but not the worst. Next season is a fresh start so he has my backing .

In an ideal world he replaced Grix and bring in another coach, but think are stuck with him.

That's the only scenario where last coming back makes sense

Pity he not replacing Grix…bit left field but knows the club and coming back to a totally different environment…on a side note, soon legged it from Catalan after 1 season and he was with Abdul for a season

I presume you are highlighting those as negatives? If yes, I agree

Not too sure about this. I guess he knows the club inside out and he's clearly rated by the likes of Wane and McNamara.

Maybe the time away from the club has done him good.

For me it's a good signing in two ways. Firstly he has been with McNamara and done some stuff with England too and he is an experienced assistant if not an experienced coach. Then Looking at it logically from his point of view the abuse he got (often on here) when he was here (yet he gave us a good season when standing in as Coach) would put most off ever returning (just ask Sneyd about that one) particularly if he was a native of West Hull.

But, he loves the club and I know that because he's told me several times both when he was with us and since and he gets the dynamic of what is going wrong and the hurt it is bringing. I've had the same conversation with Steve McNamara when he returns to Beverley and he has strong feelings for us too. Lasty's father in law is the club chaplain so he'll know all about the power of prayer and he'll need plenty of that  ,

However, lets face it unless he is totally committed to the cause why the hell would he come back to this basket case of a set up, when he can stay with Steve and live the high life in the sun on a good screw. Cartwright will have vetted him very closely (he's known out there as he's had assistant offers from Australia in the past anyway, but not wanted to go ) and lastly he's a really good bloke and black and white through and through.

So all in all its a good appointment for me, lets face it his affiliation to the club and friendship with countless fans means that if the wheel continues to fall off next season he'll hurt a lot more than Grix (who I think needs replacing) obviously does. I concur with the general view however that I think poor old Grixy is now tarnished by what's gone on, on his watch and should go, to be replaced for me with a hungry Aussie assistant. . As for Andy I'm comfortable with that but obviously it seems many don't agree with me.
