Are we seeing History repeating itself between Leeds and Saints. Go back to the 2008 grand Final and we had a very similar scenario and outcome. Lee Smith was expected to miss the grand final after kicking out into Phil Baileys (Wigoon) with blood everywhere, he was expected to get up to a 4 match ban.

Then something changed he was given a £300 fine a slap on the wrist and was allowed to play in the grand final, Saints fans accused Hethrington of influencing the decision. What made it worse was Lee Smith went on to win the Harry Sutherland Trophy that day.

We,ve been saying for years the disciplinary panel is not fit for purpose, should be dismantled and the process has to be more transparent, Ian Millward called for it decades ago but the RFL just turned a blind eye and watched the disciplinary panel to have a chaotic mind of its own.

So you agree that they have got this one wrong and then try to justify the decision with something that happened fourteen years ago.

What is really interesting with the Knowles decision is that Saints bring their "expert" with them to the appeal but, there is no one on the other side with their own "expert" or, testimony from the Salford payer or staff.
It just makes the sport look stupid.

I'm usually happy to see Leeds lose every game but, for the first time in my life (hopefully the only time), i may have to support Leeds in the GF.
Now, do you see how bad this is ?

The decision to reverse the ban is completely unacceptable. Personally, I thought it was a 1 game ban - the fact that game is the Grand Final is Knowles fault alone, he committed the offence, he takes the punishment.

However, the RFL have put themselves in this position by the over-policing of the disciplinary issues all year - excessive bans for minimal offences. This game of Rugby League is high intensity, high speed, high impact - and to police it in slow motion, and retrospectively, is quite frankly, suicide for the game. 2 game bans dished out every week for dangerous contact? We ask the players to play with intensity, there is going to be times that this is mis-timed, not malicious. You turn up every week to a game, and there will be 3 or 4 players not playing that you are paying at the start of the season to see.

I agree with most of that, quite a lot of clubs over the years have become more professional in many areas, whilst the RFL with its disciplinary process has become more amateur.

For me the Bateman ban manipulation is far worse than what we we,ve seen so far this season.

Castleford managed to use a reserves game to knock one game off Liam Watts' ban so he could play against Wigan. It's the same thing, just with England doing it, rather than a club.

I think that’s acceptable from a club basis, but what in my opinion is not acceptable is to select a mature full England International into the predominently young player England Knights Squad to chalk off his bans.

Effectively he is not really banned, also my sympathy goes with Sezer not been able to take part in that grand final. For me I would insist that Bateman sits next to Sezer at Old Trafford to comprehend his actions.

Knowles has been a very lucky lad. I thought it was a one match ban but to see the fume and collective heads falling off everywhere has been hilarious. More please!

What I want to see now is Knowles score the winning try from a ever so slight forward pass having had such a great game he bags the Harry Sunderland award. That would be delicious.

For me it is more of a shrug and look away. Be sure to let us know if that happens though.

Whoever you support and whatever you think of the tackle, it's the optics of this whole situation that irk me. It just makes the whole sport look unprofessional. Referees and officials have been undermined, the trust of many supporters has been impacted and the build up to what should be the sport's big spectacle is now being dominated by this story instead of the game itself.
Whatever happens on Saturday, this is going to be the biggest story of the week and that's a shame. Frustrating to think that it has all been brought about by the sport's own governing body.

I'd love to know what the IMG team makes of all this.

From memory the incidents aren't even remotely comparable. Smiths was a stray boot at a PTB and totally arguable one way or another as to whether he had any idea where Baileys head was.

It never went to an appeal (or a special one-off second appeal) he was just cited for a ban of upto 4 games but got none (presumably the MRP accepting it was dangerous but entirely accidental).
