Levi Edwards is a fantastic player but he is still very young and he clearly isn't ready for regular first team football in SL just yet.
Playing in the Championship and whilst still being under contract at the Rhinos is clearly the best option for him at present IMO.
We cant be putting any age deadlines either on our young players to make the first team before releasing them either as all player develop in different stages.
It could be another 2 seasons yet before Levi Edwards is potentially a first team starter so that is why we're linked with signing a centre for 2023

Really? I might be wrong but I believe Levi was still young enough to be playing in the Academy final on Sunday. He doesn't need to be anywhere near the first team on a regular basis. Far smarter to bring in McDonald from Leigh for a couple of years and send Edwards out on loan in the championship to learn his trade. Would be very surprised if the same wasn't true for the likes if Ruan and Warren. Gets them off our cap (I think) and gives them a great step up into open age rugby. You can't just throw these lads in the 1st team and hope for the best. Gannon is the exception that proves the rule.

Who's Warren?

Ah yeah I'd forgotten about him. I hope there's a couple of senior quality players coming in too, and that the projects turn out better than some of those in previous years.

He's 19 on Christmas day so I think he could have played, as could Gannon and Simpson. You were suggesting moving him on next year if he couldn’t make an impact, which is extremely harsh in my opinion. Walker, Newman, Holroyd were all thrown into first team action at a very young age - all of them have suffered hugely with injuries. The club (and fans) need to be more realistic in what they expect of teenagers. Thankfully I think Smith gets it. Will serve us well in the long term.

I wasn’t suggesting moving him on, I was looking to give him a run out until Newman is back, i was asking the question do the club see him as good enough to give him some games next year, and if they don’t would they move him on and free up cap.

Edwards, Gannon, Simpson and Warren were all eligible, age wise, to play in the Academy final

Agree about Edwards and bringing the young ones on gradually. I’m a little concerned that Gannon missed 2 weeks with concussion and is not in the Knights squad. We need to remember he’s only 18. We don’t want another stevie ward situation.

I’m curious to see who we do sign. Is smith backing his coaching ability to bring a lot of these young players on in big strides.? Could be really exciting if that’s the plan and he can do it.

I’d argue it’s probably what he knows from working in the QLD cup, you’re working with players who haven’t quite made it, or are not first choice and still developing and tasked with getting the best out of them. He’s probably used to not being able to attract the cream of the crop.
