You'd think that after a decent amount of enforced snow/ice training last year, a lot of cold weather ingenue drivers would be better equipped this year.
But no, it is my firm belief that if you are a moron who believes that the faster you spin your driving wheels, the greater the chances of forward motion, you are genetically stuck like that for life, and no amount of explanation, training or experience of the contrary can ever shake this belief, which is actually a result of a mutation of the T.W.A.T-1 gene.
Mate, we had several days last winter where we had worse weather than the Alps and roads just weren't getting cleared regardless of the driving skills.
the huge difference is that other countries expect the weather every year, and so invest in the right equipment, as cod'ead says, it's once every Sheffield flood in the UK and people would be up in arms with a few million quid worth of snow clearing equipment sat dormant from one year to the next.
as usual I will be driving from Chambery to The Alps on Christmas Eve, we land at 11am and I'll allow 6 hours to travel 32 miles, we'll have snow chains, shovel, etc etc and it will take as long as it takes.

Which is why I shall be adopting that plan this year. No computer is that important and we will still be paid.

Tried suggesting to a stranded fella last year that he stop spinning his tyres, he just gave me a dirty "I know what I'm doing" look and remained stranded. Left him there looking a purple in the face while I drove slowly away, tyres non-spinning.
I agree with BG. As soon as the roads are snarled and snow is bucketing down all over the country again, I'm off the road. My job takes me all over from Milton Keynes to Aberdeen and I'll be buggered if I'm getting stuck somewhere up the A1. The last 2 years I've probably had 5-10 days a year at home thanks to snow.

Ditto. My office commute is Worcester to Cannock, and if I'm visiting customers they could be anywhere. The last two years I've just notified everyone that I'm working from home and stayed put.
Advice is what we seek when we already know the answer - but wish we didn't

My next door neighbour tried that one. Didn't work, the cat litter just disintegrated.
Got me off the drive a few times last winter, no good on ice but on compacted snow it was great, you do need the cheap stuff though, Tesco value did the trick for me.
