For the second round running there was a full Sunday afternoon of Kingstone Press Cahampionship fixtures, and there were some mouthwatering prospects as top placed Hull KR hosted second placed London Broncos, Featherstone Rovers had a home game against the Batley Bulldogs, there was another all-Yorkshire derby between Halifax and Bradford, and Toulouse were on the road to Oldham.
Elsewhere Dewsbury Rams were the hosts as the Rochdale Hornets came to town, and Sheffield Eagles were up against the Swinton Lions.
Top billing went to the battle of the top two but it failed to live up to the pre-match hype as the Robins romped to victory and guaranteed that they will finish the regular rounds at the top of the pile. Moss (2), Jewett and Hefernan had given KR a 22-0 lead before Harrison scored an unconverted try for London. Addy increased the home sides score before the interval for a 28-4 lead. Docker-Clay established a thirty-two point lead on fifty-one before Harrison added his second and Sammut got on the scoresheet for the visitors. Mulhern scored KR's seventh try of the afternoon two minutes before the hooter but Gee snuck in on the hooter for the last try of the game as the Broncos went down by 40-22.
Featherstone Rovers edged within one league point of the Broncos with a commanding 42-14 victory over the Bulldogs at the LD Nutrition Stadium despite a Day try giving Batley an early 6-0 lead. Turner (2), and Baldwinson gave Rovers a 14-6 lead which was pegged back to a four point interval advantage after Reittie scored for the visitors. Ainscough levelled the scores at 14-14 just after the break but from then on it was all one way traffic. Ormondroyd, Davies, and Bostock scored in a devastating fourteen minute spell for a 36-14 lead with Hardman adding a try to his five goals to put the icing on the cake.
Halifax kept there hopes of a top four finish alive with a hard-fought victory over neighbours Bradford Bulls. Wood and Heaton, along with two conversions and a penalty gave Halifax a 14-0 interval lead but Halafihi grabbed a Bulls try on fifty-five to give them hope. Murray extended the 'Fax lead to 20-6 and despite very late converted tries from Ryan and Chapelhow it was Halifax who managed to hold on for a 20-18 win.
Toulouse Olympique XIII lost for a third consecutive round as their challenge for a top four finish appears to be faltering. Oldham were the heroes who went ahead through a Nield try but trailed at the interval when Planas scored, and Kheirallah converted for Toulouse for 4-6. A Tyson converted try regained Oldham the lead on forty-eight and two Hewitt penalties established a 14-6 lead just before the hour mark. Buzinac reduced the arrears to two points with fifteen minutes remaining but neither side could manage a further score leaving the Roughyeds with a stunning 14-12 win.
Sheffield Eagles looked to be in full control against Swinton as they romped to a 22-0 lead within twenty-seven minutes thanks to tries from James, Blackmore (2), and Owens. Murphy then scored a five minute hat-trick for the visitors to leave them trailing 22-16 at the break. Blackmore had completed his own hat-trick for Sheffield before Robinson scored, Murphy added his fourth and Atkin kicked a penalty to tie the scores at 28-28. The Eagles then kicked a penalty before Richardson gave them a 36-28 lead on seventy-two but a Lloyd try for Swinton was converted and narrowed the arrears to just two points. Sheffield nerves were jangling when Lo scored a try on the hooter to seal a 42-34 win.
A resurgent Dewsbury Rams are now up to eighth in the table after handing the Rochdale Hornets a 40-10 mauling at the Tetley's Stadium. Spicer (2), Adamson, Morton, and Hallett had put Dewsbury 28-0 ahead, and out of sight, by half-time. Massam got Rochdale on the board on forty-seven but Moore and Hallett, with his second, put Dewsbury 40-4 ahead. Case grabbed a consolation try at the death to get the Hornets into double figures as they lost 40-10.
It now looks like next Saturday evenings fixture in Toulouse, where fourth placed Olympique welcome fifth placed Halifax, will be instrumental in determining who will finish in the top four and play in the middle eights competition. |
