There was a lot to live up to after last nights humdinger at the Jungle as Hull KR took on the Warrington Wolves at Craven Park.
Both sides were desperate for the two points, KR needed to win by a margin of seventy or more points to get above neighbours FC into the top eight and the Wolves needed a forty-five point win to jump above Huddersfield Giants into fifth spot in their quest for the top four.
KR were without Cockayne and Campese, the latter ruled out for the rest of the season, but the Wolves were missing the services of Myler, Currie and England, who started his four game suspension for spitting at Danny Brough last week.
Strong defences thwarted early onslaughts from both sides and the were ten minutes on the clock when Chris Hill opened the scoring for the Wolves off a Ashton Sims pass. Declan Patton, with the kicking duties for the first time, kicked the two for a 6-0 lead.
For the next twenty-five minutes the defences again reigned supreme until Ken Sio broke the deadlock with a forty metres run down the right wing off an Albert Kelly pass to score in the corner. Josh Mantellato dropped the conversion attempt just short of the crossbar to leave his side two points adrift.
Just two minutes later and KR took the lead. A high Albert Kelly kick was taken by Joel Monaghan but as Kris Welham came in with a monster tackle he dislodged the ball which was flicked into Josh Mantellato's hands to step past the defenders to score. The big winger added the extras to give his side a 10-6 half time lead.
With their third try in ten playing minutes, Kieron Dixon found a gap and accelerated past Stefan Ratchford to dive over behind the posts. Mantellato added the extras and there was clear daylight between the sides at 16-6.
The night got better for the home side on fifty-three when a kick to the corner from Kelly was tapped back by Sio into the hands of Liam Salter who dropped to the ground to score. Mantellato converted brilliantly from close to the touch line and the Wolves seemingly had no answer to the imaginative KR attack.
But on fifty-seven Gene Ormsby threw his side a lifeline when he went over in the corner. Patton slid the conversion attempt just wide but the visitors were now just two converted tries behind and needed to retain their composure with plenty of time left on the clock.
On sixty-four the ex-Warrington favourite Tyrone McCarthy won the game for the Robins when he picked up a grubber to cross on his knees. Mantellato missed the extras but the Wolves had a mountain to climb at 26-12 down.
After a high tackle on John Boudebza, Mantellato kicked a penalty from forty metres to stretch the lead to eighteen points.
The party got into full swing when Kris Welham scored KR's sixth try of the night when he crashed over from close. Mantellato slotted over the goal for 34-10.
The final action of the game was another Mantellato forty metre penalty to seal a famous and well deserved 36-10 victory.
KR are now up to ninth in the table, tucked in just behind the Black &Whites in the fight for that all important eighth spot. Warrington's top four aspirations are laying in tatters and they now have the real prospect of being dragged into a fight for a top eight spot themselves.
